Wuertu Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Central Inner Mongolia. The type section is located at the Wuertu (=Urtu) section (E105°28′, N39°12′), about 50 km northwest of Bayanhot town, Alashan (=Alxa) Zuoqi County, Nei Mongol. It was named by Wang and Wang (1990). This formation is unemployed by BGMRNMAR (1996), Zheng et al. (1999), and Gao et al., (2014b).

Lithology and Thickness
Lower part is formed by a set of brownish-red silty mudstones, light brownish-yellow siltstones, brownish-red muddy siltstones and silty mudstones with gypsums, and light yellowish-brown siltstones. Upper part consists of a series of light-brown sandstones, brownish-red sandy mudstones, and light-brown siltstones. The Wuertu Fm contains abundant mammalian fossils, mainly produced from the middle of its lower part. Its thickness is about 137 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Wuertu Fm is in unconformably contact with the Middle Oligocene.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Wuertu Fm is unconformably overlain by the Pliocene Huhehaolai Fm.
Regional extent
This formation is restricted in the Wuertu exposures that is continuously exposed in a 21 km2 area within N39°10~14′ and E105°26~30′ in Bayanhot town, Alashan Zuoqi County, Nei Mongol.

Mammals: Amphechinus minimus, Amphechinus sp., Sinolagomys cf. S. ulungurensis, Sinolagomys sp., Sciuridae indet., Distylomys qianlishanensis, Prodistylomys xinjiangensis, Tachyoryctoides sp., Megacricetodon sp., Protalactaga sp., Gomphotherium sp., Gomphotheriidae indet., Rhinocerotidae indet., Cervidae indet., Artiodactyla indet.. (Wang and Wang, 1990).

Depositional setting
It is interpreted as a river-lake environment.
